Still a spellbinding place, although the municipality is doing whatever it can to force pedestrians underground and surrender the streets to cars. Even a dragon has to wait for the pedestrian light. And now, thanks to the sandstorms in China, the air is <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/8579495.stm\" target=\"_blank\">thick with pollution<\/a>. I have taken defensive measures. Why? Answer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/?p=4319\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve already seen a few films at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hkiff.org.hk\/eng\/main.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Hong Kong International Film Festival<\/a>, but I\u2019ll try as usual to fold my viewings into a few thematically related entries. In the meantime, amateur reportage and celebrity gawking take over. I&#8217;m surface-skimming, I grant you, but it&#8217;s quite a surface.<\/p>\n<p>For some years now, the festival has meshed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hkfilmart.com\/filmart\/\" target=\"_blank\">Filmart<\/a>, the regional film market and trade show, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianfilmawards.asia\/2010\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">the Asian Film Awards<\/a>. So you need badges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Badges-400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7460\" title=\"Badges 400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Badges-400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Badges-400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Badges-400-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For most of this week, the big events take place at the Hong Kong Convention Centre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Convention-centre-400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7463\" title=\"Convention centre 400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Convention-centre-400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Convention-centre-400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Convention-centre-400-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The opening reception for the festival offered all the glitter you can ask for, literally, when a cascade of sparkling paper showered down on the group photo of the organizers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/toast-400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7471\" title=\"toast 400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/toast-400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/toast-400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/toast-400-150x97.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among those present: <strong>Tang Wei<\/strong>, star of <em>Lust, Caution<\/em> and featured alongside Jacky Cheung in Ivy Ho&#8217;s festival-opener <em>Crossing Hennessy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tang-Wei-300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7468\" title=\"Tang Wei 300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tang-Wei-300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tang-Wei-300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tang-Wei-300-150x128.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there was\u00a0<strong>Lisa Lu<\/strong>, radiant as ever. I was particularly struck by the cheers and whoops the audience gave\u00a0<strong>Wang Xueqi<\/strong> of <em>Bodyguards and Assassins, <\/em>which I caught up with today.
