In 510 screenings, 279 films from 50 countries were shown. There were 19 world premieres, 17 international premieres, and 33 Asian premieres. Attendance figures are yet to be determined, but so far things look to match the nearly 600,000 tickets sold last year. (*<strong>Correction 1 May 2009<\/strong>: The figure of 600,000 refers to an estimate of total attendance at all events, including free screenings, panels, seminars, etc. Total tickets are currently estimated at 100,000. Thanks to Li Cheuk-to for the correction.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Having stayed for the whole event, I felt some festival fatigue. But the final days of the fest were full of fine movies. I left feeling that all my time was well-spent\u2014not least in seeing old friends and visiting some of the outstanding spots in this adrenaline-fueled city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ken-and-joanna-400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4323\" title=\"ken-and-joanna-400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ken-and-joanna-400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ken-and-joanna-400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ken-and-joanna-400-150x93.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span>Ken Smith<\/span><\/strong><span> and <strong>Joanna Lee<\/strong> are forces of nature in the cultural life of Asia. Working mostly in musical performance, they arrange for performers\u2019 tours, consult with cultural agencies, translate, write, and do damn near everything else as well. Call them global impresarios. They helped coordinate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/symphony\" target=\"_blank\">the YouTube Symphony Orchestra<\/a>, and they played central roles in the creation of the opera <em>The Bonesetter\u2019s Daughter<\/em>, a collaboration between <strong>Amy Tan<\/strong> and <strong>Stewart Wallace<\/strong>. This resulted in a 2008 production by the San Francisco Opera. The September premiere was broadcast in Hong Kong last Easter Sunday, and will be available at the RTHK website for playback for the following 365 days. Give it a listen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rthk.org.hk\/asx\/rthk\/radio4\/opera\/20090412.asx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Ken&#8217;s engrossing book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fate-Luck-Chance-Bonesetters-Daughter\/dp\/081186605X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1239577358&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Fate! Luck! Chance!<\/a><\/em>, documents the making of the opera and includes a libretto. You can read background on Ken\u2019s book <a href=\"http:\/\/newmusicbox.com\/article.nmbx?id=5768\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Above, Ken and Joanna take in pudding at a historic hole-in-the-wall eatery. The pudding comes in two varieties, milk and eggyolk-based. She&#8217;s on a roll: It&#8217;s her second screening in this, the major festival for short films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <strong>W Hote<\/strong>l, where the Festival was headquartered, was posh to the max. Every time I went in, I expected someone to figure out that I wasn&#8217;t well-dressed enough to be there. If you ever wondered what George Segal&#8217;s ghostly sculptures would read, you could check out these pale volumes fastened to the shelves along the elevators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w-hotel-and-books.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4336\" title=\"w-hotel-and-books\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w-hotel-and-books.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w-hotel-and-books.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w-hotel-and-books-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My own hotel was somewhat different. The <em>B. P.<\/em> in<strong> B. P. International House<\/strong> stands for Baden-Powell, and the place was teeming with Boy and Girl Scouts nearly every day. I&#8217;ve already mentioned their book on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/East-Asian-Screen-Industries-International\/dp\/1844571815\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1240096609&amp;sr=1-3\" target=\"_blank\">Asian media industries<\/a> in an earlier blog, but also have a look at their fine <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Taiwan-Film-Directors-Treasure-Culture\/dp\/0231128991\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1240096547&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\">Taiwanese Film Directors: A Treasure Island<\/a><\/em>. I gave a talk for Emilie and Darrell at HK Baptist, and we had a good discussion among their students and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">More intellect: This year the festival paid tribute to Ingmar Bergman. A friend of his,\u00a0<strong>Marie Nyrer\u00f6d, <\/strong>brought her enlightening documentary, <em>Bergman&#8217;s Island<\/em>. To\u2019s <em>Vengeance<\/em>, starring Johnny Hallyday, will open in Paris on 20 May. Mr. To and Shan continue to work with their collaborators on a remake of Melville\u2019s <em>The Red Circle<\/em>, and they&#8217;re preparing a New Year&#8217;s comedy as well.\u00a0Here\u2019s <strong>Cheang Soi<\/strong>, one of the most ambitious of the younger HK directors (<em>Love Battlefield<\/em>, <em>Dog Bite Dog<\/em>).
