In these conversations, distinguished contributors to academic film history, theory, and criticism review their careers and sum up their main ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Charlie Keil&#8217;s initiative, we participated in one such session here at Madison, back in May. The result is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/224144577\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SCMS-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SCMS-logo.jpg\" alt=\"SCMS logo\" width=\"400\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SCMS-logo.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/SCMS-logo-150x58.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under\u00a0Charlie&#8217;s guidance we discuss how we got interested in studying film, how we conceived and wrote\u00a0<em>Film Art: An Introduction<\/em>, and how we developed later research projects, including\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/essays\/classical.php\" target=\"_blank\">The Classical Hollywood Cinema<\/a>,\u00a0Narration in the Fiction Film, Breaking the Glass Armor, Making Meaning<\/em>, <em>The Frodo Franchise<\/em>, and other books.<\/p>\n<p>We talk about &#8220;neoformalism&#8221; and its relation to continental structuralism, as well as strategies of film analysis, the importance of norms, the roles of institutions in shaping film history, and cognitive film theory.\u00a0We touch on the history of Wisconsin film studies and the central role of Tino Balio, Douglas Gomery, and Janet Staiger in shaping our thinking.\u00a0We also talk about &#8220;overachieving&#8221; textbooks and our efforts to reach out beyond academic readers, especially via the Net.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie skillfully fits what we tried to do into broader trends in academic film studies. He highlights\u00a0our frequent returns to studying Hollywood as an artistic and industrial reference point. He even brings up Kristin&#8217;s Egyptological research.<\/p>\n<p>There wasn&#8217;t enough time to survey all our interests, of course. There&#8217;s probably too little on our most recent work;\u00a0if you want\u00a0to dig more into our ideas, the published work and our writing on the blog are more informative. And there aren&#8217;t enough jokes, at least deliberate ones.
