Kluge Center<\/a> of the Library of Congress. If you&#8217;re near Washington, do consider coming to one or all of these doings.<\/p>\n<p>First up\u00a0is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1549881325039883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a screening<\/a> of a sparkling restored print of Otto Preminger&#8217;s <em>Laura<\/em> (1944), at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/avconservation\/theater\/schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the gorgeous Packard Campus Theater in Culpeper, Virginia<\/a>\u00a0on <strong>8 March<\/strong>. The show, a new addition to the Theater&#8217;s spring schedule, starts at <strong>7:00 pm<\/strong>, a half-hour earlier than the customary time. I&#8217;ll be giving a brief introduction.<\/p>\n<p>On the following Monday, <strong>13 March<\/strong>, the Kluge Center will host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/prn-17-024\/director-james-schamus-to-screen-indignation-at-library\/2017-03-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;James Schamus on Philip Roth and the Art of Adaptation.&#8221;<\/a> After\u00a0a screening of James&#8217;s directorial debut\u00a0<em>Indignation<\/em>, he\u00a0will participate in\u00a0a discussion with the audience. I&#8217;ll play moderator. The\u00a0event will take place at <strong>3:00 pm<\/strong> in the Pickford Theater, on the third floor of the Library&#8217;s Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-and-Ang-2-500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-and-Ang-2-500.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4256.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-and-Ang-2-500.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-and-Ang-2-500-150x111.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James, professor at Columbia and producer and writer of many important American and Chinese films, needs no introduction to this blog&#8217;s readership. (Above, he&#8217;s with frequent collaborator Ang Lee.) We&#8217;ve celebrated\u00a0his work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2012\/05\/03\/a-man-and-his-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, and I discussed the admirable <em>Indignation<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2016\/08\/07\/indignation-novel-into-film-novelistic-film\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just last summer<\/a>. This upcoming session should be an\u00a0exhilarating\u00a0afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, I&#8217;m giving a talk, &#8220;Studying Early Hollywood: The Search for a Storytelling Style.&#8221; It develops some of the issues I&#8217;ve floated in my books, other lectures,<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/57245550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> this video lecture<\/a>, and most recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2017\/02\/27\/anybody-but-griffith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this blog entry<\/a>. The talk is set for \u00a0<strong>4 pm.<\/strong> on Thursday, <strong>16 March<\/strong>. It takes place in room 119, a magnificent venue on the first floor of the Library\u2019s Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E.<\/p>\n<p>All these events are free and open to the public, and you don&#8217;t need tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Being at the Kluge Center has been very stimulating, and my research into 1910s visual style has benefited hugely from access to the LoC&#8217;s film collections. These three events are wonderful ways to wrap up a stay that has gone by all too fast.
