So when the wobbly net connections in my hotel permit, \u00a0I\u2019ll offer some quick entries on things I\u2019ve seen and done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prizing movies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, the big news. The festival hosts several annual awards. There are prizes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signis.net\/index.php3?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">SIGNIS<\/a>, the World Catholic Association for Communication, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fipresci.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">FIPRESCI<\/a>, the International Federation of Film Critics. The festival has established its own prizes as well: for best documentary, best short film, and for young filmmakers. The complete list of winners is <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.dropboxusercontent.com\/u\/30553980\/festival4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The jury for the Firebird Young Cinema Competition consisted of Bong Joon-ho, Karena Lam Ka Yan, Christopher Lambert, and me. We faced some hard choices, but we finally settled on three winners.<\/p>\n<p>Special Mention went to <a href=\"http:\/\/forma-movie.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Forma<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/japans-ayumi-sakamoto-her-debut-692913\" target=\"_blank\">Ayumi Sakamoto<\/a>. It\u2019s a slow-burning thriller shot in mostly distant long takes and displaying a backward-looping time scheme that makes you rethink the first half. It also displays one virtue of video production: its crucial scene consists of a single shot, only apparently haphazardly composed, that lasts over 22 minutes!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Forma-1-400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27300\" title=\"Forma 1 400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Forma-1-400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Forma-1-400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Forma-1-400-150x82.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We gave the Jury Prize to Tsuto Tetsuichiro\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/iyamonogatari.jp\/contents\/renewal-en.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Tale of Iya<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s an extraordinarily ambitious film shot in 35mm Scope in a great variety of locales and weather conditions. It&#8217;s about the rigors of rural life, the need for ecological understanding, and a young woman\u2019s growing awareness of her duties to her past. Some scenes recalled the great Japanese widescreen films of the 1950s and 1960s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tale-of-Iya-3-4001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27302\" title=\"Tale of Iya 3 400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tale-of-Iya-3-4001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tale-of-Iya-3-4001.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tale-of-Iya-3-4001-150x63.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The top prize, the Firebird Award, went to <strong><em>Macondo<\/em><\/strong>, a very assured job of storytelling from Sudabeh Mortezai. The plot concerns Chechen refugees in Vienna struggling to get asylum status. At the film\u2019s center is the remarkable performance of Ramasan Minkailov as a shrewd boy who has lost his father in the Chechin war. It\u2019s a coming-of-age film, I suppose, but it also touches on issues of responsibility and loyalty without moralizing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Macondo-1-4001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27304\" title=\"Macondo 1 400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Macondo-1-4001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Macondo-1-4001.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Macondo-1-4001-150x81.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Serving on the jury was a treat for me, and I learned a lot from talking with my fellow jurors.\u00a0Karena is famous for her roles in <em>July Rhapsody<\/em> and <em>Inner Senses<\/em>. More recently she has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.442621759108943.91949.132971930073929&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Voyages<\/em><\/a>, a remarkable book of Polaroid photographs. Christopher, as both actor and producer, has several new projects, including <em>Electric Slide<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tribecafilm.com\/filmguide\/53208ab5c07f5df7d2000686-electric-slide\" target=\"_blank\">coming to Tribeca<\/a>. Joon-ho\u2019s <em>Snowpiercer<\/em> will be released on 27 June in the US; after prolonged wrangling with Harvey Weinstein, this will be <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.indiewire.com\/theplaylist\/bong-joon-hos-snowpiercer-sets-summer-2014-us-release-date-20140306\" target=\"_blank\">the director\u2019s cut<\/a>. The release will be limited, but it will pass to VOD thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black and white is the new black<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While finishing<em> Snowpiercer<\/em>, Bong took on a pretty intriguing side project. He told his cinematographer, Hong Kyung-pyo, that he\u2019d always wanted to make a black-and-white film but that no producers would finance one nowadays. Hong suggested that they remake <em>Mother<\/em> (2009) in black-and-white. So during postproduction on the big film, they used spare days to redo the color data from the older one. It wasn\u2019t simply a matter of hitting a button. They performed color correction shot by shot so as to control the exact degree of tonality and contrast.<\/p>\n<p>The result, already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yesasia.com\/global\/mother-blu-ray-black-white-version-first-press-limited-edition-korea\/1034783821-0-0-0-en\/info.html\" target=\"_blank\">released on Blu-ray in South Korea<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.indiewire.com\/theplaylist\/bong-joon-ho-unveiling-black-white-version-of-mother-at-mar-del-plata-film-festival-20131119\" target=\"_blank\">world-premiered at Mar del Plata<\/a>, had its Asian premiere here in Hong Kong. It is exactly the same film, but without full color. Punning aside, it really does become more of a film noir&#8211;harsher, bleaker, and more somber.<\/p>\n<p>The original film has a fairly muted palette, with lots of grays, beiges, soft blues, and earthy browns. Bong noted that certain colors, such as the green on the golf course, were a little opulent in the original. I had never thought about it, but in old films the actors&#8217; gazes do seem more gripping. Rendered in black-and-white it becomes even more ambivalent.<\/p>\n<p>Bong said in the Q &amp; A that the project satisfied an urge he discovered while watching <em>Nosferatu<\/em> at an archive screening without any music. \u201cIt was a very purified experience.\u201d He wondered if he could go back to \u201ca very pure state of film, like a salmon swimming upstream.&#8221; Yet the new version still harbors one visual surprise.<\/p>\n<p>The monochroming of \u00a0<em>Mother<\/em> seems to me a rewarding experiment; I look forward to comparing the two versions and seeing how each can suggest different sides of a scene or summon up different expressive qualities. At the moment, I prefer the black-and-white version, and Bong suggested that he was starting to do the same.
