It&#8217;s aimed for Cannes. More details at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbiz.asia\/news\/hou-hsiao-hsiens-assassin-wraps?utm_campaign=weekly&amp;utm_source=fba&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\">Film Business Asia.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>About a year ago Jim Udden visited Hou on the set and shared his insights with us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2013\/01\/06\/master-shots-on-the-set-of-hou-hsiao-hsiens-the-assassin\/\" target=\"_blank\">in this entry.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new Hou film, especially if it featured swordplay, would make me a very happy man. 2013 was a good year for several top Chinese directors, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2013\/10\/07\/where-did-the-two-shot-go-here\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tsai Ming-liang<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2013\/10\/21\/viff-2013-finale-the-bold-and-the-beautiful-sometimes-together\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jia Zhang-ke<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2013\/07\/08\/mixing-business-with-pleasure-johnnie-tos-drug-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">Johnnie To Kei-fung<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2013\/09\/23\/the-grandmaster-moving-forward-turning-back\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wong Kar-wai<\/a>. Having a new film from Hou augurs well for the Year of the Horse. And it stars the sultry Shu Qi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S. 19 January 2014:<\/strong> Alas, the Year of the Horse won&#8217;t be as auspicious as I&#8217;d hoped. Jim Udden tells me, on the basis of a message today from Ms. Huang, that <em>The Assassin<\/em> will require another year for post-production. But they are likely to show some clips at Cannes, so there&#8217;s that. . . .
