{"id":2109,"date":"2008-03-22T11:21:53","date_gmt":"2008-03-22T16:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2011-03-01T22:44:01","modified_gmt":"2011-03-02T03:44:01","slug":"party-time-in-hong-kong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/2008\/03\/22\/party-time-in-hong-kong\/","title":{"rendered":"Party time in Hong Kong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/erics-party-new-sharp.jpg\" alt=\"erics-party-new-sharp.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nToday, pix from two get-togethers during the Hong Kong International Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Johnnie&#8217;s dinner<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Johnnie To<\/strong> gave another of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/?p=729\" target=\"_blank\">his legendary dinners<\/a>, this time to a crowd of filmmakers, distributors, festival directors and programmers, and hangers-on like me. The meal was old-school HK fusion, mixing Brit colonial food (boiled tongue, boiled potatoes, boiled veggies) with unique local variations (pigeon, a puffy vanilla souffl\u00e9). I think it&#8217;s akin to what Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung scarf down so elegantly in <em>In the Mood for Love<\/em>. Very tasty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Among those present: Director <strong>Kirk Wong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"kirk-w-2-300.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/kirk-w-2-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/kirk-w-2-300.jpg\" alt=\"kirk-w-2-300.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Kirk made <em>The Club <\/em>(1981), <em>Health Warning<\/em> (1982), <em>Gunmen<\/em> (1988), and other classics, including the 1994 double-header <em>Organized Crime and Triad Bureau<\/em> and  <em>Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll Cop<\/em>. These are terrific movies, admired by every fan of action cinema.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Festival consultants consult: <strong>Mike Walsh<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Melbourne<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adelaidefilmfestival.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adelaide<\/a>); <strong>Stephen Cremin<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.easynetserver.it\/easynet\/Frameset.asp?CODE=FEFF&amp;FROMSTART=TRUE\" target=\"_blank\">Far East Film Festival of Udine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/ScreenDailySearchNews.aspx?page=1&amp;strSearch=&amp;strSearchType=All+words&amp;strCategory1=&amp;strCategory2=&amp;strCategory3=&amp;strCategory4=&amp;Author=202&amp;Location=&amp;StartDate=&amp;EndDate=&amp;strSort=Most+recent&amp;x=37&amp;y=2\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Screen International<\/em><\/a>); and <strong>Todd Brown<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/2008.sxsw.com\/film\/\" target=\"_blank\">S x S W<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fantasiafest.com\/pre2008\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">FantAsia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchfilm.net\/site\/search\/results\/04df7091cdd8d23b0e09c8ff48175844\/\" target=\"_blank\">Twitchfilm<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"michael-stephen-and-todd-300.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/michael-stephen-and-todd-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/michael-stephen-and-todd-300.jpg\" alt=\"michael-stephen-and-todd-300.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong> Cameron Bailey<\/strong>, Co-Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tiff07.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>, lets me try an Ozu-style composition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"cameron-300.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cameron-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cameron-300.jpg\" alt=\"cameron-300.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>A small bolt of lightning <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"eric-yet-again-400.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eric-yet-again-400.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/eric-yet-again-400.jpg\" alt=\"eric-yet-again-400.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of the most appealing things about Hong Kong film is that character actors, as we call them in America, go on and on, becoming not only stars but directors and producers. As Leslie Cheung pointed out, the local audience is loyal to its favorites and encourages them to try many things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Eric Tsang<\/strong>, the short, cherubic guy with the perpetually hoarse voice and blinding smile, began, surprisingly, as a soccer player. In 1974 he became a bit player and stuntman in Shaws&#8217; martial-arts releases. He directed two of the movies in the top-grossing <em>Aces Go Places<\/em> cycle (1982, 1983), and rose to become a screen personality. He&#8217;s so familiar to Hong  Kong movie lovers that we couldn&#8217;t call him Tsang; he&#8217;s just Eric, and he&#8217;s irreplaceable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He worked steadily and hard, appearing in nine films in 1985 and an astounding seventeen in 1988. Several of his performances are superb: playing a small-time loser in <em>Final Victory<\/em> (1987), a flamboyantly gay music coach in <em>He&#8217;s a Woman, She&#8217;s a Man<\/em> (1994), a philandering policeman in the exhilarating and little-known <em>Task Force<\/em> (1997), a wistful romantic in <em>Metade Fumaca<\/em> (1999), and of course an implacable triad boss in the <em>Infernal Affairs<\/em> trilogy (2002-2003). He perks up every movie he graces, rescuing routine projects with his beaming ordinariness. In a fairly ordinary policier like <em>Cop on a Mission<\/em> (2001), he starts out as a thuggish menace and becomes not only sympathetic but heroic in his devotion to his errant wife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Cop on a Mission<\/em> is one of several of Eric&#8217;s films screened in the HKIFF tribute. The event also emphasizes his role as a producer. Thanks to him, we have <em>The Outlaw Brothers<\/em> (1990), <em>Dr. Mack<\/em> (1995), <em>Men Suddenly in Black<\/em> (2003), <em>Jiang Hu<\/em> (2004), and several films he coproduced with Peter Chan Ho-sum. Most recently, Eric has launched a project to support young directors. He launched <em>Winds of September<\/em>, a feature trilogy about coming of age in the &#8220;three Chinas&#8221;\u2014the mainland, Hong  Kong, and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For the premiere of <strong>Tom Lin Shu-yu<\/strong>&#8216;s Taiwan entry on Friday night, the festival held a little party for several hundred of Eric&#8217;s closest friends. For once, that last phrase is no joke; everybody feels close to him.<\/p>\n<p>Glamor to spare: <strong>Cheng Pei-pei<\/strong>, of Shaws&#8217; glory days and since, with her daughter <strong>Marsha Yuan Zi-hui<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"cheng-peipei-and-daughter-300.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cheng-peipei-and-daughter-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cheng-peipei-and-daughter-300.jpg\" alt=\"cheng-peipei-and-daughter-300.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Peter Chan<\/strong>, fresh from the success of <em>The Warlords<\/em>, chats with <strong>Tony Rayns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"peter-chan-and-tony-rayns-300.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peter-chan-and-tony-rayns-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peter-chan-and-tony-rayns-300.jpg\" alt=\"peter-chan-and-tony-rayns-300.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle Carey<\/strong>, Festival Editor of the encyclopedic online journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sensesofcinema.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Senses of Cinema<\/em><\/a> and scout for several film festivals. Alongside, <strong>Cheung Tat-ming<\/strong>, idiosyncratic young actor; check out his laid-back performance in <em>Once Upon a Time in Triad Society 2<\/em> (1996).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"michelle-carey-225.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/michelle-carey-225.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/michelle-carey-225.jpg\" alt=\"michelle-carey-225.jpg\" \/><\/a> <a title=\"cheung-tat-ming-225.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cheung-tat-ming-225.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cheung-tat-ming-225.jpg\" alt=\"cheung-tat-ming-225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also there were <strong>Teddy Robin Kwan<\/strong>, a wonderful actor and pop singer who first made his mark with movies from Cinema City, and <strong>Albert Lee<\/strong>, this year&#8217;s Executive Director of the festival.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"teddy-robin-225.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teddy-robin-225.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teddy-robin-225.jpg\" alt=\"teddy-robin-225.jpg\" \/><\/a> <a title=\"albert-lee-225.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/albert-lee-225.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/albert-lee-225.jpg\" alt=\"albert-lee-225.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And <strong>Eric<\/strong> was as entertaining from the back as from the front.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"erics-head-from-the-rear-300.jpg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/erics-head-from-the-rear-300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbordwell.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/erics-head-from-the-rear-300.jpg\" alt=\"erics-head-from-the-rear-300.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next time, I promise more on the movies.
